The University of Michigan-Health/Sparrow/Michigan State University Emergency Medicine Residency program is an ACGME-accredited three-year program. This program prepares residents to be certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine and/or the American Osteopathic Board of Emergency Medicine. Residents rotate through Sparrow Hospital and McLaren Greater Lansing for their clinical rotations. Sparrow Hospital is a Level I trauma center and sees over 100,000 patients per year with a dedicated Pediatric Emergency Department. The McLaren Greater Lansing Emergency Department treats over 45,000 patients annually and specializes in cardiac care and orthopedics.

Clinical Experience

Our program offers residents the opportunity to receive outstanding training in emergency medicine, providing extensive hands-on experience. Didactics occur every Thursday morning and include small group sessions that include, but are not limited to, EKG interpretative skills, simulation sessions, ultrasound sessions, and skills labs to provide you with a unique learning experience that will help prepare you for the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) and/or American Osteopathic Board of Emergency Medicine. This program also features faculty members who are dedicated to helping you succeed in your future endeavors, teaching and mentoring you throughout your time as a resident.

Convenient Location

The University of Michigan Health-Sparrow Hospital is conveniently located within walking distance of the state capitol and within driving distance of Michigan State University, offering a college-town atmosphere. Lansing and East Lansing offer a wide variety of opportunities for you to explore, such as going to Wharton Center to see a Broadway production, attending a Lansing Lugnuts baseball game, visiting the Potter Park Zoo, paying a visit to the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum, and, of course, stopping by the MSU dairy store for ice cream!

Curriculum & Research

Our residents are offered a diverse range of clinical experiences throughout their stay. Each rotation is thoroughly thought through to provide residents with the best experience for learning, offering a wide range of electives to choose from, including, but not limited to, ENT, forensic pathology, radiology, toxicology, and more.
